AP Photo

For my senior year, I decided to join AP photography to expand into learning the finer details of creating photos. At this point, I want to explore my passion of photography into different areas, and not just sports for example. I also want to refine my photo composition details. By the end of this class, I want a clearer vision if photography is something I want to pursue as a career.

5×5 photography

This shooting assignment was meant to teach us how to utilize our frame as a square. This proved hard because it was difficult to have balance within the photo. It was also difficult to shoot in squares because it was hard to have that harsh of a transition because I shoot horizontal and vertical all the time. So, it was hard to adjust to having my frame be square because I felt like my abilities to create a good shot was cramped. However, I was able to try my hand with square photography. Here are my five best shots.

Principles of design

In this shooting assignment, we aimed to create pictures using composition principles such as emphasis, balance, repetition, pattern, movement, contrast, proportion, and unity. At first, movement was by far the hardest to grasp. With sports photography, movement is usually self-explanatory, but this composition relied on having the viewer move their eyes towards a specific subject. Eventually, I was able to get a good shot of movement, which can be seen in the bottom left of the gallery below. To me, the easiest principle to convey was contrast, because there was a bright blue sky outside and there are usually a bunch of different colors in West Linn. It was easy to overlay different colors.

Elements of art

For our first shooting assignment, we aimed to capture these elements: line, shape, form, space, value, texture, and color. This was a fun assignment because I got to go outside, and have no pressure in getting the exposure before the moment runs out. Here were my best captures during this assignment:
